Postponing The Inevitable

16 April 2013

We spent our afternoon outfitting the car – we scored free sleeping bags and blankets from the rental agency, but we bought inexpensive pillows, pillowcases, and a sheet for hot nights when the blankets will be too much.

Of course, we also stocked up on bread, peanut butter, jam, apples, and water.

By late afternoon, we were ready to go.  And hot and tired.  And not quite ready to hit the road and look for some place to camp for the night.

We’ve been meaning to go to the Darwin Trailer Boat Club, which is a membership club but also has a wonderful deck and bistro facing the water (the Timor Sea).  So we headed there, chatted a bit, had a cold drink, and obtained permission to camp in the parking lot.

Easy!

Oh, see all the rocks that have been piled between the beach and the club?  Which, by the way, has a lovely
grassy lawn as well as the decks, a children's playground, and such.

My guess is that the rocks create a barrier between crocs climbing up the beach, and the area where people hang out.  Because no one wants big mean saltwater crocs stalking their children in the playground.  Or interrupting an evening drink while watching the fabulous sunset.  Right?
This is a  blue blue water, and of course the sign  warning us not to go into the water due to crocodiles and jellyfish.  So we enjoyed the view from the deck.

We’ve spent our evening here – chatting with a few people, having dinner, and watching the glorious sunset.  Sunset here seems to linger, the colors intensifying even after the sun has dipped below the horizon, as if the sun is reluctant to say goodbye to the day.  More and more color, until that begins to fade slowly slowly to dark tones and then to black – a long slow sunset.

Stars, bats, and a crescent moon overhead.  The cool sea breezes are picking up, and it should be a pleasant night.

In our tent.  On the roof of the car.  In a yacht club parking lot.
